Koshmar

The reveal for Koshmar: The Last Reverie is here, with the world and actions of Koshmar: The Last Reverie giving us all something familiar

It is fun to wake up to new announcements in the gaming world, and we have one for Koshmar: The Last Reverie. As in, the game is on the way to us all as an up-and-coming studio, Purple Ray Studio, is working on a new action-adventure title that seems to draw inspiration from so many other titles that we all love. One of them is the American McGee's Alice games that we are never going to see more of. Don't think that means that Koshmar: The Last Reverie is going to be ripping the game off, but just mentioning that title should give you a starting point to think about when it comes to this game. Both in gameplay and in the art style, we are going to see in the future when this one hits PC and consoles. Now that we have that jumping-off point, let's see just what this game is going to bring to our systems, and if we should all be truly excited for it.

The story we are getting in Koshmar: The Last Reverie goes a little something like this. We are taking up the role of Violet, someone who also happens to have the ability to lucid dream. Well, some of those dreams and nightmares seem to be slipping into reality, and Violet needs to put everything back in place… or go insane trying. That will allow us to have some Dream and Nightmare shifting weapons and powers in the game that sound as if they will have lasting effects in reality as the rest of Koshmar: The Last Reverie plays out. Not to mention, it will alter Violet's appearance and the various endings to the game that we can expect to play. Add in a dash of platforming, a sprinkle of fast-paced melee combat, and a few extra roguelike elements mixed in, and we have the rest of how the game is going to play out. Again, with that gothic and exaggerated style that was popularized by the inspiration titles. Have a little look at some of the "work in progress" gameplay that is mixed in with the announcement for the game just a bit further down.

Koshmar: The Last Reverie — Announcement

The world has awakened to Koshmar: The Last Reverie, an upcoming action-adventure game by Purple Ray Studio, an incredibly talented, up-and-coming Polish studio comprised of veteran developers with credits in both AAA games and critically-acclaimed indie titles. Their second title, Koshmar: The Last Reverie, is a fast-paced, third-person single-player action-adventure set in a gothic-inspired realm of dreams and nightmares that features both roguelite mechanics and RPG elements that ask players to wield dueling perceptions to their whim, and bear the consequences.

Through the eyes of the game’s protagonist, Violet, a teenager growing up in a small town, players delve into her subconscious through her unique lucid dreaming ability. When nightmares break through her dreams and her reality, she must venture into the depths of the darkness and risk her sanity to protect those affected by the sleeping sickness. Purple Ray is proud to be developing and publishing Koshmar: The Last Reverie for PC and console. Watch the trailer for a glimpse into what Purple Ray has dreamed of and what has plagued their nightmares for the past few years of development.

The Duality and Reality of Koshmar: The Last Reverie

Assuming the role of Violet, a teenager in a bleak, colourless world, players explore her unique ability to lucid dream to escape her reality and inhabit others’ nightmares. How the player progresses through Violet’s physical world, exploring new places and meeting new characters, or approaches the nightmarish realms of those affected by the sleeping plague, will have impacts on how she perceives, and is perceived by the world in return. For instance, utilizing Dream or Nightmare weapon styles will unlock resources that amplify dream-like delusions or invite maddening mentality when Violet returns to the real world. Depending on how deeply she dives into these “Delusion” or “Madness” states affects her appearance, and how the world presents to her. Further, combat weapons and abilities are unlocked depending on playstyle.

Koshmar: The Last Reverie will feature:

  • Several variations for adrenaline-fueled action combat, through Violet’s abilities, upgrades, skills, and more.
  • Platforming & puzzle-solving against a stylish backdrop of surreal to sombre settings in a completely original world.
  • Nightmare versus Dream-inspired combat style choices; will you appear as from a dream or a nightmare? Your choices could have consequences that affect the real world.
  • Multiple endings with variable factors, where player choices have an impact that shapes the world around you.
  • Replayable Nightmare Rifts, bringing roguelite moments to sharpen or dull your mental state.

Koshmar: The Last Reverie combines the best of brutal combat, elegant engagement, storytelling, and discovery. Gothic and steampunk aesthetics painted with lush hand-held brushstrokes will be a feast for the eyes that begs to be explored. Players should anticipate deep world-building, novel mechanics aligned with the universe, and agency when navigating the nightmares and dreams created by the developers, who have been hard at work on the game for the past two years.

Koshmar: The Last Reverie is in active development for PC and consoles.

Do you see how Koshmar: The Last Reverie was more inspired by the other title and not a ripoff? Do you think that all of the endings will be truly unique and not just some that offer up an end just with different characters standing around? Will we have to play both the light and dark sides of the game, or will we have the option to embrace one only? What would you do if you were able to lucid dream as we see here? Let's hear those thoughts and feelings down in the comments, so we can all discuss them. We are going to have more for Koshmar: The Last Reverie now that we know it is a game that is coming.
