Video Games Live Lives In Your Living Room

Popular concert series Video Games Live has announced a crazy line-up of the of some of the most familiar and epic video game soundtracks for a new 90-minute special they are filming for PBS. Now, Video Games Live has been around for a while and is the brainchild of game music composer Tommy Tallirico and Jack Wall. For the unitiated, Video Games Live consists of video game music performed by a live orchestra with game footage and different lighting effects to coincide with the footage. This version of the concert will include music from the Super Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Halo, Warcraft, Final Fantasy, Castlevania, God of War, Civilization, Chrono Cross, StarCraft and Guitar Hero franchises, and will also be "including a musical journey through Classic Gaming".

PBS has released a trailer and it is as epic as it truly needs to be.

The special will air on July 31st and then being replayed throughout August 2010 on PBS stations. The CD and DVD/Blu-Ray will be released alongside the special and will be available in North America through PBS until November 1, 2010. Additionally, the CD features 16 performances and the DVD/Blu-Ray includes three plus hours of bonus material, including:

  • Extended music segments
  • Composer and game developer interviews
  • Exclusive game trailers
  • “Making the game” documentaries
  • Behind-the-scenes footage
  • Composer commentary

Having never had the chance to check out the show live, I look forward to seeing the show on television and also picking it up on BluRay. Here's hoping that Mass Effect I&II find their way into the show (Jack Wall composed the soundtracks).
